The upcoming Skylake rMBP will do even better in terms of power efficiency. A new 2015 rMBP will do a whole lot better than your 2012 machine in every way.

I have to use iStat to keep the fans spinning up high all day or else thermal throttling kicks in and everything slows to a crawl- pages take a long time to refresh, Xcode takes a long time to build and run, etc.

I am an average software developer and my general workday consists of a VMware VM and a varying combination of webstorm, android studio, and Xcode. I have two external screens hooked up to it, one of which is a 4K Dell at 30Hz because that's the maximum the laptop can output at 4K. So I think my mid 2012 rMBP is struggling a little bit with its current workload.
